Connected Learners Share

Today was really useful. I set our site up at the beginning of the year, and as with last week, the refresh was great and I have been talking with my team about how we could use it better within the class to motivate and engage our learners. Another colleague has also given time to talk about using Explain Everything and with a bit of luck in getting some more devices, we could be onto something!

Looking at the sites through different lenses  - visual engagement and ease of use, made it easy to see what needed to be done on our learning site - from a simple descriptor so that visitors know the age of the students and location of the school, to putting the actual date on learning rather than our school system of Term 3, Week 7 - this means nothing to anyone apart from teachers!

Making the home page relevant to the learners by including images of them was an easy fix as was being able to change the shape of the buttons. The process of creating a drawing, then downloading as a png and then putting it onto the site and adding the link from there was my main learning today. I had a lot of practise at it too.

Now the real work can begin of creating slides to engage the students in reading and getting my team on board with creating templates for reading groups so it is as user friendly as possible to update them each week with new learning. Starting simple is key and we can add things such as sight word practise and create tasks as we develop our skills.

These are screenshots of what I achieved today - as well as updating the how you can help at home page with links to some more maths games. As always it takes so much longer to get everything looking how you want than you think!

So now to keep updating the other pages to ensure consistency across the site. I can see that once we get our slides up and running what a useful resource it will be as rewindable learning and for our parents to be able to engage in learning with their children at home too.

  1. What a good idea to make homepage relevant to the learners by including images of them! I will try that on my website as well.

    1. Thanks Armen - something I saw on one of the example sites - but when I looked at our site I felt it could be more engaging for our students and loved the photos.

  2. Kia ora Rachael,

Thank you for such a quality reflection on the DFI Week 6. Your site is looking amazing! Your 80+ students are so lucky to have you developing such visually and cognitively engaging resources for them - well done. Keep up the great blogging.
